La vida es un Carnaval

Carnaval Press is an independent poetry publishing project created by Virna Teixeira, a Brazilian poet, writer and translator based in London. Virna started her experience as an independent publisher in 2009 with Arqueria Editorial in São Paulo, designing handmade poetry pamphlets, as a reaction against a hard to access more male oriented publishing market at that time in Brazil. She published more than twenty titles with Arqueria, which also included works in translation and contemporary South American authors.

After moving to London, Virna created Carnaval Press in 2015, initially to present and promote Brazilian contemporary poets in the UK. The project has expanded to include books, Latin American and international authors, with focus but not exclusively, on female authors. Bear in mind that she is a self-taught designer and does all this work by herself, with Brazilian stamina, in parallel with a medical career among other activities, with the eventual support of Brazilian designer Renan Iha, who has helped her with some fantastic covers.

It has been a small but persistent project, which has faced obstacles to continue, particularly after the pandemic. In the last couple of years Carnaval published two titles: the anthology Disease, in collaboration with Instagram publishing project sunseekers and more recently New York City Jail & Other Stories, a compilation of fictional writings by renowned Serbian poet and writer Nina Zivancevic.

Carnaval is connected to online electronic magazine Theodora, which has collaborators in Latin America and Europe.

Virna is a digital artist and has started to illustrate some covers with her work. You can also find her mugs with portraits of poets and poetry-related theme.

Prices include postage to the UK.
